Hi,you may well be interested in some comments on UKIP's associate in The EFD Group as first flagged up to me by Barbara Booker:
Clearly a much misunderstood character, albeit one whose colourful story will no doubt enliven proceedings at Exeter tomorrow when he addresses UKIP's Spring Conference.
Picture, if you can, the astonishment on party members' faces as they thrill to his tale of organised crime in Bulgaria in the 1990s: of gang warfare between Bulgarian and Turkish mafia; of shootings and bombings; armed robbery; the murder of his business partner, and how he, Slavi Binev, was kidnapped and beaten by armed attackers; of corrupt authorities, and of media accusations that he was a gangster.
Untrue, naturally, and when his nightclub BIAD was raided it was only once found to have packages of cocaine in the toilets and hookahs for the use of marijuana and hashish!
Party members still struggling to come to terms with a 'libertarian' approach to such matters will be relieved to learn that pictures of a crucified naked woman and nuns as strippers in the strip bar 'Abbot' were taken after Binev sold it, and that accusations concerning fraudulent credit cards, blowing up a former partner's car, threats and cutting of ears were all vigorously denied . . . . .

The archly Eurosceptic United Kingdom Independence Party (Ukip) is reaching out to its EU neighbours.
The party, currently experiencing a bounce in the polls, is holding its spring conference this weekend (23 March) in its south-west heartland.
The keynote speaker will be Slavi Binev, an MEP and new member of the Europe of Freedom and Democracy Group (EFD), the parliamentary group that Ukip is affiliated with in the European Parliament. He is also a former taekwando champion in his native Bulgaria.
Yes; that’s Bulgaria, where Ukip leader, Nigel Farage, has been having a few public relations problems of late, and whose latter pronouncements on the country and its natives, have seen the party draw criticisms from politicians and citizens alike.
Two open letters to the press published recently, one by Bulgarian, Ralitsa Behar, the other by British ex-pat Jonathan Taylor, have both sought to take the Ukip leader to task.
“You achieve nothing by your racist xenophobic comments other than to further isolate what was a great nation into a ‘backwater has been,’ wrote Taylor, who suggested that “in protest at your remarks I was going to organise a boycott of British goods but sadly I couldn't find any to boycott.”
Indeed the ongoing spat has been threatening to get out of hand. So much so that a recent visit to Sofia by Ukip MEP Paul Nuttall, on the invitation of Binev, saw the party’s deputy leader attempt to quell local anger about comments by Farage that seemed to suggest Bulgarian citizens are unnaturally eager to come to Britain to exploit its work and welfare system.
A press conference given by Nuttall and Binev descended into argument, when members of the far-right nationalist Ataka party, including its leader, Volen Siderov, interjected, accusing Ukip of bigotry and hypocrisy.
Binev came to Ukip’s defence.
He was first elected to the European Parliament in 2009 as a member of Ataka, before being a member of the Conservative Party Movement of Success (GORD).
Aside from his links to a party whose political affiliations include the Front National in France, the Austrian Freedom Party, and other right-wing parties in Belgium, Romania and Italy (through the short-lived Identity, Sovereignty and Tradition group), Binev has also been cited in a US State department cable, subsequently released by WikiLeaks, that links the MEP to “criminal activities including prostitution, narcotics and trafficking in stolen automobiles”.
Binev has said, as recently as a 7 March article in the New York Times, that all he was doing was aiding Bulgaria in its transition from communism to “blossoming” capitalism.
Of course, suggesting that Bulgarians are a race of criminals waiting to exploit any weak-willed and gullible welfare system is a ridiculous stereotype, not worthy of grown-up political discussion. Unfortunately, the stereotypes remain. Like those expressed by one MEP during a debate at the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 13 March.
“Bulgaria and Romania are rapt with corruption and organised crime,” the diatribe went. “They should never have been allowed to join the European Union. We do not believe it is right and fair to have total open borders for unlimited numbers of people from those countries to come to Britain to work, but also, if they want, to claim benefits. We should not be in a political union with Romania and Bulgaria.”
And the speaker of those sensitive words? Stand up, Mr Farage.

Bulgarian MEP Slavi Binev, who is exposed in a diplomatic cable revealed by Wikileaks as an OC group leader will present at the next plenary session in the European Parliament a report on financial aid for "Arab Spring" countries to be granted by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development [EBRD].
The cable in question lists the major figures of the Bulgarian Organized Crime. It was first published by The Guardian, severely censored, due to libel concerns.
However, not a single libel case was filled from the exposed protagonists after and since the Bulgarian investigative journalism website Bivol published the uncensored text, but Bivol's editor Atanas Chobanov was subject of a smearing campaign in Bulgarian media owned by the exposed mobsters.
Former US Ambassador in Bulgaria James Pardew, who is also a former military intelligence officer wrote in the cable about Binev:
I. (C) MIG GROUP (also known as COOL PASS[3]) The MIG GROUP, headed by SLAVCHO PENCHEV BINEV (Bulgarian citizen born 10 December 1965, also known as "SLAVY"), owns more than 30 nightclubs, bars, and restaurants in Sofia, including the popular nightclubs BIAD, DALI, and BIBLIOTEKA. GEORGI STOYANOV (Bulgarian citizen) and MIHAIL STEFANOV (Bulgarian citizen) are "Slavy" Binev's two deputies. The group's business interests also include construction and tourism; it operates a travel agency as part of its COOL PLACE entertainment complex. The group's criminal activities include prostitution, narcotics, and trafficking stolen automobiles.
Bulgarian OC is one of the main concerns of US diplomats in Sofia. Prominent figures of the actual Bulgarian political and business elite are considered to be connected to OC and Russian Mafia, including PM Boyko Borissov, who is linked to amphetamines trafficking, oil syphoning and money laundering.
"Information from SIMO tends to substantiate these allegations" - wrote in 2006 US Ambassador Bayerle in a secret cable from Sofia. As for now, the meaning of SIMO remains a mystery.
Slavi Binev Determines...
Binev was elected MEP in 2007 on the ballot of the Bulgarian far-right, nationalist party "Ataka", but left it later and recently founded his own nationalist party, named GORD.
"Slavi Binev determines which Arab Spring country to finance" was the title of the press release sent today to announce the event.
"Financing should be done carefully over the ever-present risk of funding a dictatorial regime", Binev stated in the press release, sent by GORD's office.
The announce comes just after the arrest of human right activist Nabeel Rajab, interviewed in the Julian Assange Show "The World Tomorrow," in Bahrein, which is one of the prominent "Arab Spring" countries, where the dictatorial regime is still in place.

With friends like this and a number of the other EFD members few can wonder at the fact that UKIP is seen as of no gravitas and racist.
Little wonder that UKIP is not taken seriously and is largely perc eived as a sound dustbin for protest votes, hence good results in EU elections where it is realised by the British public they are more a comedy turn with no power than active politicians with any gravitas or authority.
In domestic elections UKIP's results are risible and after 21 years of trying at every opportunity not only do they not have a single MP but they have never come close to getting one and out of the huge number of local election seats available UKIP has around 5% only and those in the main are at the irelevant level of Parish Councils!
Membership of the EFD has done nothing but harm the credibility of UKIP and hardly surprising when one considers the gutter sweepings of EU politics that the group harbours!
